South Buffalo NY to Tonawanda

We were in Buffalo NY on the South Side and moved up the channel toward Tonawanda on the 18th of Aug.  We had to stop and fill with diesel.  Then there is a channel that parallels the Niagra River.  The river drops about 8 feet over a 2 mile distance.  The river is rapids so we followed the channel.  The first obstacle was a

then we saw a bird with wings open (we thought perhaps it had bad BO) but actually it dries it’s wings.

Can someone help with the name of this bird?

Then we came to a swing bridge.  It swings in the middle.

As we approach then pass a swing bridge.

Then we came to a lock that lowered us 8 feet to the river level so we could get back onto the river.IMG_3572 IMG_3573 IMG_3574

This is locking through to the river.  Basically a water elevator.

This is how the river was running outside the channel

This is the Tonawanda suspension bridge, we always get nervous before, even though we know it is high enough, that we might not clear it.

A car for William our grandson

Passing a park we saw this car notice the towel laid over the fender for protection.  When we saw this we thought of our grandson William and his love for classic cars.  I’m not sure what kind it is but it looks beautiful and English.

Then we came across my new favorite store West Marine and I couldn’t even get in the marina was private and specified no entry.

We finally arrive at Tonawanda at the Smith Boys Marina.  By far the poorest slips and channels for our b0at.  Plenty deep enough (in most places) but the piers were narrow concrete without tie down cleats.

I will continue about unstepping the mast in the next blog.
